World Cup Fever

I forgot to post this, with all the end of school year excitement, but now that the US has moved on to the next round, along with England, I can share with pride the night we tied…

2010-06-12 2010-06-12 002 006 who knew I was married to Captain America?

The group watching from inside the sports hall was quite intense,2010-06-12 2010-06-12 002 001 so I was part of the “outdoor crowd” that just ran to the screen when things got loud…

As an American, I was thrilled with the tie – And after 2 weeks of world cup fever, even Sophia knows how to chant “USA!  USA!”

Sunday at the Ballpark

Who would have known that Regensburg has a great baseball stadium?2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 102 Turns out we knew one of the players…2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 136 On the first warm & sunny day of the year, we spent the afternoon hanging out at the ballpark, watching Brehan play 3rd base on his 33rd birthday…2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 040 2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 103 and having fun with our girls…  2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 025 2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 174 I couldn’t find the mariners’ shirts for the girls, and myself, so we wore our Roots “USA” shirts from the Olympics, and our Mariners’ hats.  Troy passed off the hat, and everyone knew that we were the loud Americans!2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 227 (Alexandra is still drooling!!)2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 190 2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 213 Sophia stole everyone’s baseball caps,2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 242 Alexandra was able to swing with the big toy…  2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 254 and we had a couple more family photos taken, and silliness with the birthday boy…2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 275 2010-05-23 2010-05-23 001 280 What better way to start spring in Munich than with a game that my brother is playing.  In all the years we have been in Europe, we have only seen his home field, and never were able to enjoy his play.  There is almost nothing as good as drinking a cold beer in a stadium, watching Brehan, and I never had to yell at the Umps once!…

Olympic Legacy

Here are some additional images from an unforgettable journey to the Olympics. If this trip reminded us of anything, it’s that we really love the Northwest – for the weather, the people, the cities, and the lifestyle. We spent the first weekend in Vancouver, and the second weekend of the Olympics in Whistler. Whistler Village was so small we ended up eating next to one of the women’s US skiers from the US, and walked by the four man bobsled Gold medalists from the US. The previous weekend, we met Dan Jansen, the ‘94 Olympic gold medalist in speed skating. All part of the Olympic Experience.IMG_1158

The amazingly successful Visa campaign that covered every billboard, every storefront, and every TV station. Go World!

IMG_1260 Looking out toward the Pacific Ocean from the Granville bridge. We rode across it on a very thin waking path between the railing and speeding cars. You will notice – absolutely NO SNOW in the mountains where many of the events are taking place.

And a scene you don’t expect to see at the Winter games – an absolutely stunning sunset over English Bay. The weather was terrible for the athletes, but what a treat for the spectators.

IMG_0111 The sculpture park near English Bay received the attention of everyone who passed by.

Who would have thought that the best of our events would be the Biathlon. The Norwegian anchor of the 4-man relay came out of retirement to win the race by 48 seconds. The real race was for Silver, where the Austrian raced against the Russian for the entire last lap and ended up winning by two-hundredths of a second. That’s how an Olympic race should end.

IMG_1330 Moya with all the Norwegian colors in the background. It seemed everyone who came to the Olympics was a fanatic – with flags in hand, and we were no exception totting the Red, White & Blue.

Finally, back in the Olympic Village at Whistler where visitors lined up to take silly photos in each of the rings of the Olympic emblem.

Vancouver

Just a few photos of our fun in the city that isn’t sleeping right now, not even if you want to take a nap in the sun.  There is just too much going on!!

Deutschland Cup

This weekend the Hockey teams from the US, Germany, Slovakia (I think) and Switzerland played in a tournament here in Munich.  Troy & I went to the Friday night match up between Germany & the US with some friends from Troy’s office & from Sophia’s school.  Oct 2009 552 We thought it might be the same team we saw play at the World Championships in Switzerland in May (they were struggling), but they did manage to win, in an Overtime – shoot out 3-2.

Oct 2009 541

We were the only people we could see that brought our US flags, and we even made it up on the big screen.  The Germans sitting around us were very entertained by us, and everyone stayed thru the awarding of MVP & playing of the US national anthem at the end of the match.  Oct 2009 535

Usually we aren’t much for flag waving when we are the foreigners, but it was great fun!

Oct 2009 537Of course Troy was also wearing his Slovakia team jersey, so we got lots of crazy looks…

Munich Marathon

No, I didn’t run it – although I think it will be on my life list from now on given how flat it is – but Sophia & Troy went around the corner from our house while the race was on (it took us 1/2 hour to drive the 10 min to the gym this morning) and Sophia raced the runners at kilometer 35 (I bet they were pretty pissed that a 5 year old could keep up at that point).
